Lou Hayter

Lou Hayter is a creative and detail-oriented designer who specialises in creature design and speculative evolution. Hayter enjoys building physical models of unique and visually interesting creatures that embody the idea of the “Other” or the unknown. Where possible, they take on the challenge of designing creatures that are able to survive in the real world, using research of existing living creatures and theoretical possibilities to inform outcomes. For their Final Major Project, Hayter focused on the subject of using escapism to confront daunting topics. The result is a model of a cosmic-sized bear whose fur makes up the known universe, with the model intending to make fears of infinity and the unknown easier to confront by giving them an empathetic form and face. The process of building the final model encouraged Hayter to experiment with a number of different materials, allowing them to finish the project with a well-made final outcome, and a strong foundation in a number of design methods.
