Jing Sum Fan

Jing Sum Fan is a dedicated and hard working individual, her work often revolves around the relationship between nature, human behaviour and art within architecture. She flourishes in the design phases of projects by applying issues and highlighted aspects from the research phase into her design to create a well rounded and applicable proposal to the site. Fan aims to harmonise landscape and community through purposeful iteration and function. Due to her artist background, a lot of her work consists of hand drawn exploration in all kinds of medium to bring creativity and the playful nature architecture should be.

Construction section
Construction sectionA colourful section showing the building use and construction that marries the old to the new. The original structure was unique for its time, a solely concrete church was never seen before however the wear of time proved brutal to that material choice as cracks began to show. Fan's proposal aims to support the walls with mycelium, a new organic healing material, additionally Kenoteq bricks made from old construction material.

Process and sketchingThis collection of multiple sketches of the expansion of Dilston church highlights more dedicated spaces for different proposed functions and facilities as well as initial structure. The exploration of seating, structural supports, drainage and planter arrangements as well as more material investigation and ventilation helped visualise sections and elevations for the idea.

Exploded Axonometric ScheduleThis axonometric highlights main functions in the greenhouse and a psychedelic therapy clinic proposal. Emphasising the greenhouse structure as well as other building utilities such as the water recycling system in the basement to repurpose for the plants.
Sectional Material Model
Sectional Material ModelFan's model aims to highlight the spatial experience of the coloured light rays and scale of the greenhouse arches. The variety of materials are intentional in displaying the new concrete sandwich which will support the existing structure. This kaleidoscope effect is greatly effective and with contrast to all the plants will look beautiful as well as fitting to his clinic method of therapy.
Pathway in Light
Pathway in LightThe charcoal drawing emphasises the light Fan has been able to carve into the central space by opening up the arches of the walls, creating beautiful sun beams that would bounce colour and shapes on all surfaces. Especially in the clinic, where nature is the source of healing, sunlight has always been connected to elevated moods and health. Additionally, the colourful oil pastel experimental view points of the building were created to help visualise and communicate how Fan wanted the building to be experienced.
