Ivana Sotirova

Ivana Sotirova is a menswear designer, who challenges traditional menswear through cut, fabric combinations and silhouette. Her work explores under looked political messages, previously looking at Julian Assange’s case and the current Istanbul Convention situation in Bulgaria. Most recently, “A Clockwork Dystopia,” investigated the presence of free will in society and what would happen if it were to be taken away. Sotirova was influenced by the political history of Germany and the USSR and used it in a way to warn people about what may be in the future for us if we do not act upon our political and government situations now. She visualised her ideas by creating a short dystopian film, which can be accessed via her Instagram link. Featured, in the film are her own garments, which all reference different parts of USSR history to evoke a reaction by representing all this inhumane history to people it should make them think about what that means for our future, will events repeat themselves?
Sotirova is very aware of sustainability issues so therefore “A Clockwork Dystopia,” she experimented with creating bioplastic made from common household ingredient to reduce her own textile waste.

Next year, Sotirova plans to widen her industry knowledge by diving into full-time internships on her year out and finish her current internship with Stefan Djokic. She is also planning to apply to the renowned Antwerp fashion course in Belgium.

“Hidden in the Surface” Final Garment
“Hidden in the Surface” Final GarmentThis project looked at raising awareness of the impact of not instituting the Istanbul convention in Bulgaria and leaving women completely defense-less to domestic abuse and harassment. Within this project, Sotirova explored how the Orthodox church was involved in not ratifying the convention and how it hides the abuse going on within the country. For the outcome, Sotirova wanted to look at making women scary through not only the garment but also the styling, makeup and editing as a form of protection.
